SEASLUGS SURVEY MONITORING PROJECT

Help Us Reveal What Most Divers Never See

The Seaslug Survey Project is a continuous, year-round study designed to understand how nudibranch species appear, disappear, and shift across seasons in Tulamben, Bali. By returning to the same sites every month and conducting both daytime and nighttime surveys, we are building a rare long-term record of seaslug biodiversity in this region.

But the impact of this project goes far beyond academic research:

For underwater photographers: Consistent, long-term sightings help predict when certain species are most likely to emerge, making it easier to capture rare nudibranchs in their natural habitat.

For macro divers and nudibranch lovers: Our verified identifications and monthly updates make the ocean more “readable,” helping enthusiasts understand what they’re seeing underwater.

For students and researchers: This project provides an open door to real ecological data: abundance trends, environmental correlations, and species distribution over time.

For conservation work: Nudibranchs are sensitive indicator species. Tracking their patterns helps us understand reef health and detect early ecological changes.

Despite its potential, the project is currently limited by essential field equipment, especially for night surveys and documentation.

To ensure the continuation and improvement of this project, we are seeking support to obtain essential research equipment, including:

  • 2 full sets of diving gear (IDR 15,500,000/set)

  • 4 underwater torches for night dives (IDR 3,000,000/pcs)

  • 1 underwater camera (IDR 15,000,000/camera)

  • 2 external underwater lighting units (IDR 3,200,000/units)

By contributing, you help make this project stronger, more accessible, and more valuable for everyone who loves the ocean, from scientists to photographers to the wider conservation community.
